Conductors

Alan Pash – Senior Orchestra

Photograph of Alan PashAfter a year of violin and a brief encounter with a cornet Alan settled on the trombone as his choice of expression at the age of 10. As a member of his local authority youth orchestra and of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra, he came in to contact with musicians of the highest calibre, performing at the top of their profession. He went on to study at The Royal College of Music and developed his love of 'early music', performing frequently with all of the London ensembles, notably The London Cornett and Sakbutt Ensemble. Freelance work with The Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestra of English National Opera and two West End shows kept him busy in his third year at college. Shortly after leaving college he arrived in Scotland to take up the post of Section Principal Trombone with one of Scotland’s Orchestras.

Alan started teaching for East Dunbartonshire in 1983 and he also coaches the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and the West of Scotland Schools Symphony Orchestra. Whilst having played as a guest Principal Trombone in nearly every orchestra in Britain Alan is passionate about paying back the good fortune he enjoyed in the tutors he had as a youth. Their commitment and inspiration for the pursuit of excellence and enjoyment are paramount in what Alan does.

Marj Partridge – String Orchestra

Photograph of Marj PartridgeMarj’s music education began with piano lessons, but it was only when she started violin at the age of 13 that she discovered the real thrill of music; playing with other people.  Throughout studying for her university music degree, teacher training (class music) and teaching (initially class music then violin), she has always been a member of at least one orchestra and played in smaller groups. She encourages pupils and her two daughters to follow suit and enjoy the social aspect of music-making. She has helped out at BMYO for several years now and is enjoying conducting the String Band.  She has been a member of the Glasgow Sinfonia since its early days and recently enjoyed performing Berlioz’ Symphonie Phantastique with them.  Her daughters both play the violin and are members of the East Dunbartonshire Schools Senior Orchestra and BMYO.
