Symphony Orchestra

The Symphony Orchestra is for all instruments from Grade 5 upwards. Players are usually at secondary school.

We are pleased to introduce our new conductor Christopher Gray.

Conductor - Christopher Gray

Christopher Gray graduated from the RSAMD in 2001. Alongside his post as Head of Musicworks and Instrumental Teacher Training at the RSAMD he is sought after as an orchestral trainer. His work has covered the full geography of Scotland, working with String and Symphony Orchestras of all ages and abilities. He has toured extensively to France, Germany, Holland and the Czech Republic and performed in most of Scotland's premier venues and conducted for world class soloists including trumpet virtuoso John Wallace. Forthcoming engagements included Scottish Opera, and Aberdeenshire Youth Orchestra as well as residencies at the Oberlin Conservatoire in Ohio, USA and the Curtin Institute in Perth, Australia.

Some quotes from people who have worked with Christopher include :

“I've played with some quite good film composer/conductors - Previn, Williams, Davis (Carl), Bernstein (Elmer) and Chris has what it takes. The North Ayrshire Schools Symphony Orchestra were impressive and impressively trained.”   John Wallace, Principal RSAMD, International Trumpet Virtuosi

“what was clear was the meticulous detail in the playing, suggesting rigorous, disciplined coaching and the securing of an impressive level of musicality in phrasing, ensemble, dynamics and integrity. In a superbly focused performance of the Shostakovich [Shostakovich, Chamber Symphony Opus 110a], all of these elements, along with the mood, concentration and intensity of the music, came together.”   North Ayrshire Camerata and Uddevalla Strings, RSAMD 7th August ‘09, Micheal Tumelty, Herald Scotland, 10th August ’09.
